The Truth
âWhereâs who?â Finn asks innocently.
âThe fairy,â Jack replies, looking up at the sky. âOnly magic could make me skate this well. Plus, I saw the glow around my skates.â
Finn shrugs and says, âIt wasnât a fairyâit was me.â
Jack laughs. âI know it wasnât you,â he tells Finn.
Finn just grins and nods his head. Bella and I nod our heads, too.
âBut . . . how?â Jack asks, sounding totally confused. âHow did you do it?â
âWith magic,â Finn replies. âFinn is just my nickname. My real name is actually Griffin, Griffin Dillon.â
Jack opens his mouth to say something, but nothing comes out. He just stares at Finn. Then he looks over at Bella and me. âDid you two already know this?â We nod our heads. Jack looks back at Finn. âDo my parents know?â
âIâm sure they know by now,â Finn answers.
âWell . . . this is just the coolest thing ever!â Jack exclaims. âGriffin Dillon is one of my best friends!â He pauses for a few seconds, then says, âAlthough, if itâs okay with you, can I keep calling you Finn?â
âAbsolutely. I wouldnât want it any other way,â Finn agrees.
âAlright then, letâs go skating!â Jack cries, gliding towards the trees.
Iâm about to follow him when a loud chirping noise fills the air. The red bird from town flutters down and lands on the ice. In the blink of an eye the bird transforms into Riley, who is already wearing skates and a helmet.
âItâs about time Griffin told you his secret,â Riley says. âIâve been waiting and waiting to join in the fun.â
Of course! Now I understand why Finn was winking at us earlier. Riley was the little red bird.
âTry to catch me,â Jack calls, as he skates towards the trees. The rest of us take off after him.
For the next twenty minutes, we follow the ice path through the thick forest. We skate over bridges and down tiny hills. We zig zag around evergreen branches that stretch halfway across the ice.
As I pass by a particularly large tree, I slow down and pick up an evergreen needle thatâs fallen onto the ice. It rolls easily between my fingers, which means itâs a spruce needle. Spruce trees have needles with four sides, so they roll easily. Fir tree needles are flat and donât roll very well.
Bella comes to a stop beside me. âThe ice rinks at home are going to seem really boring after today.â
âThey definitely are,â I agree. âAlso, weâd never see that at home.â
I point at Finn and Riley, who are having a conversation with a couple of deer. Everyone in Finnâs magical family can talk to animals.
Jack skates over to joins us. After observing Finn for a minute, Jack says, âWhat I donât understand is, why didnât Finn tell me his secret sooner?â
âDo you remember when Finn first came to the village?â I ask him.
Jack nods his head.
âFinn came to the village because he wanted to be treated like a regular kid,â I explain. âIf heâd told you he was Griffin Dillon, you would have treated him differently.
